Does it even make sense?

If I bought a Miata. Would it even be feasible to swap a bike engine. Could I “loose weight, and gain horsepower” & have something enjoyable after the nightmares of making that work... What cycle engine would you stuff into a Miata ? (I really wanna do this)

Hayabusa. Radical probably had a good reason for doing so...

I would have to do a Harley swap. Just to mess with people.

Considering the most powerful Miatas made a mere 180hp and most were in the 130-150hp range, you could get above these with a Hayabusa motor, but I’m not sure whether it would actually be faster. Motorcycle engines are designed to produce less torque due to the light vehicle they are moving.

I’d imagine that some auto engine swaps would be far more effective. I’m thinking about how scary one would be with the engine out of my Focus ST (nearly 50% more horsepower and over 100% more torque) implanted in it.

That engine with the control setup can be had for $6995 brand new too. I’m assuming salvage would be a bit cheaper but a reprogramming still is $1500.

I accept your challenge.

Oh yeah, I completely forgot. With a $300 bell housing adapter it directly matched up with a Miata transmission. That has to be a million extra points.

I’ll add a link to the original build , since it’s far more in-depth.

(Note: Part 1 is around where parts 16 & 17 are. The site’s coding is weird.)

Look up motoiq miatabusa, their swap coverage is pretty in depth and gives you a good idea of whats involved.

Someone put a snowmobile engine in one and ran it in the 24 hours of Lemons. It was still pull start, too.

I’ve seen a CBR1000RR motor in a honda S600: http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/entertainment/videos/a25796/honda-s600-jay-lenos-garage/

But that car is about 600lbs lighter than an NA miata. or basically a whole sport bike lighter.

Maybe if you used an engine from a goldwing or some other fat cruiser it might be ok. You need more torque with a heavier car. Otherwise I think you’ll end up spending a lot of money in performance upgrades, and there really isn’t a whole lot of weight to shed from a Miata.

I’ve done some research into Miata engine swaps as I’m planning on building a track toy out of one in the near future, and I think the best swap is the Honda J-series V6. One of the cheaper swaps out there. An engine from a 2002 Odyssey runs about $400 from local recyclers, makes 240hp, has actual torque (because minivan=heavy) and only weighs 9 lbs more than a 1.6.

You never see anybody doing engine swaps with RSV4 engines.

You should totally do that.

But... why? Get an SR20VE and enjoy 200 naturally aspirated stock horsepower, or get an SR20DET and enjoy ALL OF THE POWERS.

Just don’t LS swap because that’s a stupid cop out that ruins the car.

The whole idea was Bike engine in a car. I’m not sold on a miata or a busa, Maybe an old Austin sprite with a Goldwing engine. Definitely not an LS. Loosing weight is my goal. Lots of weight
